The UP Office of the Faculty Regent expresses its deepest condolences on the untimely passing of Dr. Lourdes E. Abadingo, former UP Faculty Regent (2012-2014) and former Secretary of the University and the UP Board of Regents. We join her family, friends, colleagues, and former students in mourning this profound loss. Her contributions to the University and the broader academic community will always be remembered.

The Sole Faculty Representative in the BOR

The Faculty Regent is the sole representative of the UP faculty in the Board of Regents (BOR), the highest policy making body of the university. As a member of the BOR, the main role of the Faculty Regent is to participate in collegial policy making and ensure that policies are in the university’s best interests, bearing in mind the general interest and welfare of the faculty, the university, and the nation.

For the national university, I have always believed that merit promotions are meant to inspire personnel to uphold honor while aiming for excellence in the service of the community. As such, merit promotion guidelines are meant to institutionalize standards of excellence, thus shaping our professional trajectories in the university. I was guided by this belief as I stood firm in my position during deliberations. I asserted that the guidelines did not undergo a thorough and participatory consultation process across all campuses and units and that many faculty members were neither informed nor given the opportunity to meaningfully engage in a policy that will significantly affect their careers. Strong reservations were raised about provisions that offered limited pathways for advancement to those who did not enjoy institutional positions of privilege. At a time when we are already stretched thin by inflation, heavy workloads, and attacks on academic freedom, these provisions risk further widening the existing disparities. But let us be clear: this is not just a faculty issue. As we lament our own dire conditions, we must also not forget the plight of our REPS and administrative staff, many of whom lag even farther behind when it comes to promotions, recognition, and institutional support. For far too long, they have carried the invisible burdens that keep our university functioning and yet their contributions are often overlooked and undervalued. In even worse conditions yet are our contractual workers who, despite years of dedication, service, and sacrifice, have no clear path to promotion or regularization at all. Please know that I carry your voices with me in every meeting and every vote. I am one with you in clamoring for a university that truly honors the labor of its faculty, administrative personnel, researchers, artists, professional staff, and extension workers by ensuring that our systems of recognition do not penalize those who are already overworked and underserved. I commit to pushing for a university that listens, and that learns from its own community. As your Faculty Regent, I therefore urge fellow faculty members across all constituent and autonomous units to turn this moment into a unifying call for collective reflection and shared advocacy. I encourage you to use available channels of communication to send your thoughts and insights on the promotion guidelines and process. In the days that will follow, let us make our voices heard at department and college meetings to propose alternatives and push for systems that genuinely reflect our values and realities. May the celebration of Easter inspire us to build a just, inclusive, and nurturing academic community, not only for ourselves but for those of us who truly need it the most.
